Mtibwa Sugar head coach Zuberi Katwila  has called on the club to stay calm as they battle to get themselves out of trouble at the foot of the NBC Premier League.

Mtibwa Sugar were held to a goalless  home draw by Dodoma Jiji on Tuesday. The result put them in danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

After ending 2023 with a rare win against fellow strugglers Mashujaa, Mtibwa Sugar have started the new year with back to back defeats. They have defeats to Coastal Union and Ihefu, Tuesday’s stalemate stretched their winless run to three league games.

With only two wins and eight points, rock bottom Mtibwa Sugar are now ten points from the safety of 12th position with thirteen games to play.

Katwila has admitted they are in a difficult time and has called for calm heads as the pressure steps up in the relegation battle.

“What remains is to look at the tactical and calmness of how we can use these opportunities that we create. We are having a hard time, the situation is not good but we need to stay calm.”

“If you play like this, you are expected to get results, so we should not be discouraged. We need to keep calm in other games and play like this because we are determined to get positive results.”

Two teams will be relegated automatically at the end of the season. Second from bottom Mashujaa boosted their survival hopes with victory over Geita Gold on Sunday. They are now three points ahead of Mtibwa Sugar and also within touching distance of other relegation battle candidates.

Safety remains a mathematical possibility for Mtibwa Sugar with more than a dozen games to play, but with several teams down at the foot of the table meeting over the next coming rounds,  Katwila and his charges know how quickly the picture could change.

Mtibwa Sugar  face Singida Fountain Gate in Mwanza and Tanzania Prisons at home next week, fixtures that could easen or heightened their relegation fears.
