Young Africans have been named on the final shortlist for the Men’s Club of the Year in the forthcoming 2023 CAF Awards.

Earlier this month, a panel of CAF Technical Experts, African Football Legends and selected media representatives from a number of countries put together the preliminary list for the various categories with the performance of the nominees between November 2022 and September 2023 serving as the period under consideration.

Young Africans together with nine others  were nominated for the Men’s Club of the Year award. The initial list had CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly, Raja Casablanca, Mamelodi Sundowns, Esperance, ASEC Mimosas, CR Belouizdad, Wydad as well, Marumo Gallants  as Confederation Cup and Super Cup winners USMA.

The list has now been trimmed to five clubs. In addition to Young Africans, USMA, Mamelodi Sundowns, Al Ahly and Wydad are the final shortlisted clubs for the club of the year award.

Young Africans’ journey to the top of African football began in the NBC Premier League, where they defended the league title and won the Federation Cup last season. At the continental stage, they enjoyed a stellar run in the CAF Confederations Cup, going all the way to the final last season.

Under the guidance of coach Nasreddine Nabi, Wananchi only lost the CAF Confederation Cup final against USMA Alger on the away goals rule. They won the return fixture 1-0 in Algiers but the 2-1 defeat they suffered at home in Dar es Salaam in the first leg proved detrimental.

This season, they are on top of the NBC Premier League standings after nine rounds of fixtures. They have made it to the CAF Champions League Group stage. Under the leadership of Argentinean coach Miguel Gamondi, Young Africans won all their four CAF Champions League qualifiers to book a group stage ticket for the first time since 1998.

Wananchi have been drawn in Group D of the CAF Champions League along with Al Ahly, Algeria’s CR Belouizdad, and Ghana’s Medeama. They are set to start their campaign with a trip to Algeria next week.

In addition, Fiston Mayele who was instrumental in Young Africans Confederation Cup run has been shortlisted for the CAF Inter Club of the Year Player. Mayele finished as the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup top-scorer with seven goals. He joined Pyramids FC of Egypt at the start of this season.

The winner of each category will be decided after votes from a voting panel consisting of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals from Member Associations, Head Coaches & Captains of Member Associations and clubs involved at the group stages of the Interclub competitions.

The Awards Gala is to be graced by the crème de la crème of African football on 11 December 2023 in Marrakech, Morocco.
